Beyond Borders

October 28, 2016 – February 12, 2017

Steve McCurry is one of the most renowned masters of contemporary photography and serves as an inspiration for many, especially young photographers, who see in his work a way to view our times. Each of his photographs encapsulates a complex universe of experiences and emotions, with many of his images recognized worldwide.

Since 2009, Civita and SudEst57 have organized various exhibitions highlighting distinct aspects of his photographic work, attracting over 800,000 visitors.

The new exhibition at the Palazzo delle Arti Napoli showcases his most famous photographs along with some recent works and previously unpublished images. It particularly highlights his role as a photographer committed “beyond borders” in areas of the world where conflicts arise and populations endure suffering as they flee their homelands. This theme remains highly relevant, and Steve McCurry has documented it since the late 1970s.

The exhibition opens with a section of black and white photos taken by McCurry between 1979 and 1980 during his first mission in Afghanistan, where he accompanied the mujahideen fighting against the Soviet invasion.

He has returned to this country numerous times, and it is from there that the girl he photographed in the Pakistani refugee camp in Peshawar originates. She has become an iconic figure in global photography and a symbol of the seemingly unattainable hope for peace in a world plagued by wars and mass exoduses. Her most famous portrait is displayed alongside two other shots, one of which McCurry took 17 years later after finally finding her again following a long search.

In parts of the world where life is often more challenging, McCurry’s lens has captured both poetic images and the harsh realities of war and violence, from the Twin Towers to the Gulf War, the conflict in Afghanistan to Japan post-tsunami, child soldiers to the pain within hospitals—images that reveal a seldom-seen side of McCurry.

Curated by Biba Giacchetti, the exhibition offers a journey through McCurry’s world, from Afghanistan to India, the Middle East to Southeast Asia, Africa to Cuba, the United States to Italy, showcasing his vast and captivating collection of images where human presence is always central, even if only suggested. In Peter Bottazzi’s evocative installation, this humanity greets us with its gazes in a kind of dance where ages, cultures, and ethnicities intermingle, captured by McCurry with extraordinary intensity.

Promoted by the City of Naples – Department of Culture and Tourism and the Pan/Palazzo delle Arti Napoli, the exhibition is organized by Civita Mostre in collaboration with SudEst57. Media partners for the event are Il Mattino and Radio Kiss Kiss.
